Book Review: Vyckie Bennett of the Nebraska Civic Digest (Aug.
2004)
"Why is staying together such a struggle for American families?
Divorce is rampant, but it is only the most obvious example of
family separation. For most of us the problem is much more subtle.
In our culture, it can be hard even for loving Christian couples
to develop family togetherness. Why is this so? Some of the challenges
are obvious, but others may surprise you." - James McDermott,
co-author of The Christian Family.
Marriage, children, parents, child discipline, keeping the home,
courtship, counter culture, inspiration - who but the most bold
would endeavor to address such an array of topics as they relate
to the Christian family in modern America? Authors James and Cynthia
McDermott, publishers of SALT Magazine, do not claim to have all
the answers. But as homeschooling parents of eleven children,
the couple has certainly accumulated plenty of practical experience
which translates into a goldmine of wisdom for today's families
who can use all the help we can get.
The format of the McDermott's book, The Christian Family: In
the World, but Not Of It, is a collection of essays - sometimes
humorous, but always touching - which makes this an easy read.
Despite the relaxed, let's-talk-over-a-cup-of-tea style, this
book is challenging. Husbands, wives, moms and dads, siblings,
and even pastors will find themselves re-evaluating long-held
presuppositions about their biblical roles in relation to the
Christian family.
In a day when Christians are too often superficial, diligently
portraying themselves as always happy and successful, the humility
of this couple is truly refreshing. Jim and Cindy candidly share
not only the triumphs but also their shortcomings and failures.
Such transparency only serves to bolster the McDermott's credibility
as they tackle even the controversial subjects of birth control,
spanking, modesty, courtship and marriageable age, family TV policy,
submission, working moms, bankruptcy, Church youth groups, and
what age children should be taught about sex.
There is much insight and practical wisdom to be gained from
the McDermott's book. The brief essay, Motherhood: Dirty Diapers
and Child Evangelism alone is worth the purchase price. Helpful
hints on household organization, time and money management, praying
for our children, lost children, and newborn babies, make The
Christian Family invaluable. If you've ever felt overwhelmed,
distracted, discouraged, under-appreciated, stressed out, burned
out, or just plain bewildered on this roller coaster ride called
the Christian family, this book is for you.
